vesa-matti builds frequency converters during the day and at night he is living life as a dj, producer and sound enthusiast. both the man and his music originate from the sunny city of vaasa on the west coast of finland. recorded in his previous studio, located in an old brick building on miller street, the late night sessions in a building that mostly hosted rock bands resulted in several hours of recorded drum patterns, loops and synth lines creating a fascinating fusion of nordic-flavoured dub aesthetics and twisted sound manipulations.

on thanksgiving 1989, kmart employee and audio enthusiast mark davis wandered behind the customer service desk to check out the store’s sound system, which looped muzak and top 40 plus ads and announcements under the banner of “kmrt, the kmart radio network.” when he found last month’s tape hadn’t been thrown out yet, he pocketed it and made a habit of doing this, collecting 56 tapes from 1989-1992. in september 2015, davis uploaded the tapes to archive.org with the humble intention of preserving them. but within a few weeks he became an internet celebrity among obscure media fans and supplemented the collection with reel-to-reel tapes from the 70s and 80s thanks to tom schwarzrock, who acquired them serendipitously along with a deck he purchased. the tapes are like a consumerist time capsule, a vaporwave trove of eerily familiar corporate ephemera extracted from its original context and purpose. similarly, attention kmart choppers is composed of pieces from this collection chopped up, resculpted, and mosaicked together by juicy the emissary, forming a new, distinctly contemporary sound while inheriting a haunting nostalgia that provokes memories burrowed deep in the subconscious

seige monstracity is an anomaly in the music industry. he rides the fence, providing the contemporary soundtracks for successful commercial artists such as yg, tyrese, keisha cole, and marsha ambrosius, as well as producing grimey backdrops for underground artists like bizarre, bad lucc, and namebrand.

disco inflections and happiness-driven chanting begins this release. off-placed rhythms call one to move. listening and dancing, is what needed. such need is further pursued in a2. listen. move. ‘which of the waltzes’ explores layering of sounds and is driven by shama joseph’s spontaneous vocal improvisation. while the rhythm swings, the vocals and piano maintain the warm harmonies. the final track is a broken rhythm expulsion. snippets of vocals and deeply resonating piano hints to what ‘which of the waltzes’ could have sounded if further experimentation in sonic reductionism would have taken place.

after spending the majority of 2009 in hollywood, chanes briefly returned home to finish up songs for what would become his 2010 release, an experimentation in instrumentation. the 15-track tape, presented by house shoes, exposed us all to the nomadic 21-year-old producer from canton, michigan. chanes would spend the next two years working between home and brooklyn, before relocating to arizona, where he would release his follow up project, renegade hands, (insect records 2013). presented again by shoes, hands solidified chanes as one of the most promising young producers in the country.
fast-forward to 2016, and at 27, this self-titled debut takes us circa 2007 - 2009 with the soul-chopping salad days of his mother s basement, through the alternative sampling williamsburg, brooklyn sessions of 2010. if the melancholy desert psychedelia of his isolated four years in perpetual southwestern summer gives us a glimpse into his growing electronic influences, then the angst of his winter homecomings are hiding under the aggressive parka weather beats that first caught the attention of detroit’s underground.
fittingly, chanes’ debut lp comes full circle, finishing the album back in the place it all started and releasing it with long-time supporter house shoes and street corner music.

repress 2018... following on from isaac tichauer s street lessons release, the mysterious loft records calls in the talents of bicep, hackman, dorsia and lancelot for a choicest remix package. the french express signing turned many heads when he dropped his lauded devotion lp back in 2012, and since then the australian producer has risen to become a formidable name within modern day electronic music. therefore it s only fitting that an all-star cast were chosen to remix his latest release on loft records. bicep, who had an enormous 2015 with releases on aus and 50 weapons, begin the release with the only remix of higher level - a break infused cut fashioned for the dancefloor with a penetrating melody, echoing vocals and soaring pads. the first of three street lessons remixes then comes from hackman, known for his work on 20/20 vision and futureboogie, who incorporates serene synths and subtle stabs to transform the original into a quirky renovation with elements of funk. london duo dorsia then step up with a cacophony of sounds that build in suspense with the introduction of fuzzy atmospherics, until fellow australian and w&o street tracks artist lancelot generates a cavernous dub containing the originals infectious hook whilst implementing resounding rimshots and wobbly keys.

australia’s deep street soul, since signing to freestyle records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the mc5’s wayne kramer saying that their version of kick out the jams “... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”. from their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up look out, watch out (and the addition of vocalist mighty may johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them. 2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. case in point is souls come alive - from monique boggia’s wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and may johnson’s simply exemplary singing - the songs instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music. come alive also features guest vocalists joshua tavares and kylie auldist - come alive is deep street souls finest work - no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. it s a done deal.

ext returns with his follow up to the third installment of house shoes reputable “the gift” series with “arts & craft”. ext cleared off his desktop about a year ago and sent me everything he had been working on. all of the tracks were in various stages of development. some loops, some fully fleshed out, some sounded like sketches. it drew my attention because of the resounding innocence of the collection, an innocence that is more or less gone from the industry in 2015. listen and learn what it sounds like to just have the intention to create, not muddled with the star aspirations or big money dreams. just to create.
